Matariki at the Museum is a three-year journey to exhibit and experience the complexity of what Matariki signifies while we build a resource for our museum archives at the same time! In 2024 with Trilogy One, we walked the nebula of Matariki in a dark museum space and were introduced to the science of the Matariki cluster with Planetarium North. In this second chapter of our Matariki Trilogy, we unveil the tales of the nine Matariki whetū (stars) through the prism of taonga. This journey ignites profound connections to the vibrant traditions and narratives of Matariki, showcased through artefacts from the Whangārei Museum Collection. These taonga represent tangible connections to the Matariki season, and our intent is for our community to be immersed in the rich history, culture and celestial wonder that these stars embody. Each of the nine whetū holds a unique significance, representing different aspects of life, the environment, and the passage of time. Through carefully curated objects and their narratives, we aim to illuminate the ways in which Matariki intertwines with the past, the present and future. As visitors journey through the space, we aim to bring to life the legends and teachings associated with each star. From the nurturing essence of Tupuānuku, which governs food grown in the earth, to the guiding light of Hiwa-i-te-rangi, the star of wishes and aspirations, each narrative will offer insights into the Māori worldview and its profound respect for the interconnectedness of all things. By engaging with these stories, we hope to foster a deeper appreciation of the role of Matariki as a time of reflection, connection and renewal. Our community is invited to not only observe but participate, contributing their own stories and experiences to the evolving narrative of Matariki. This collaborative spirit ensures that the knowledge and celebration of Matariki will continue to resonate with future generations, enriching our shared cultural heritage and strengthening our bonds with one another and the cosmos.
