The Whangarei Museum is pleased to present the story of Ada Fairburn and her unexpected passion for sericulture!
In the late 1800's Northland, the dominant expectation was for women to focus on homemaking, child-rearing, and supporting their husbands.
However, Ada needed to deviate from the traditional path.
She had a fascination for the art of sericulture which then served as an inspiration to her children, especially her son Ernest.
This exhibition is dedicated to all the Ada's out there, breaking the mold.
Museum visitors will experience an extraordinary journey through Ada's old photographs, writings and tools used in her work.
Also showcased are samples of silk and various products created from silkworms, offering a glimpse into the life of a woman who used what she had to make it through the challenges of life!
You can visit the exhibition in the Whangarei Museum with any general admission here at Kiwi North!
