The c1900 women's jail originally had two cells and was situated in Whangarei between Clyde Street and Cameron Street. Food was handed through the hole in the door.
Alongside the women's jail cells stood an eight cell men's jail and sergeants house. All three buildings were relocated to Tangiteroria, on the Dargaville Road, to make way for a new police station in the 1960s. In 1993 only the women's jail was moved from Tangiteroria to the Whangarei Regional Museum (now Kiwi North) to its current place on Heritage Park and is open for visitors to experience.
